Yeah.

And I'm normally done with winter right about now.

But yesterday was a nice reminder that hope springs eternal. Wish I could upload the video here of me saying, "Oh, shit! Please don't poop!" as a flock of maybe 50 Canada geese or more flew right over my head. [ img ]

There were literally hundreds of geese on the lake and a smattering of mallards and coots. The geese fly to a farmer's field to spend the night, so they leave in huge flocks. And they are so ridiculously noisy![ img ][ img ]

A couple of weeks ago a V of Canada geese flew over while I was out in the barn and I heard a definite impact on the roof.
They do poop when in flight. In case anyone was in doubt. :P

You know, I was actually thinking about that earlier. I don't use the word shit for the actual action. I only use it for an exclamation. I have no idea why.

Robins are the traditional North American avian harbingers of spring, but some individuals are non-migratory, so not really the best choice. A better one is when the Cardinals decide to start singing again, and that moment has arrived in southern Michigan.
For 2022, it was February 8. I suppose they know best, but that seems awfully optimistic. :suspicious:

I heard them this morning too! What in the world?

But, also, the eagles are going to lay their eggs any day now, so there's that.

The last 7 years were the hottest 7 on record, so I wouldn't be surprised. If the birds are going by temperature, and insect availability, rather than day length, then they may well be starting earlier. it's in the mid 70s here today. Not the February of my youth.

I don't think eagles care about insect availability.

Everything lower on the food chain does.

You will all be happy to revel in a little schadenfreude. This Californian chose not to spend the past few days luxuriating in balmy weather, but to go camping in the mountains, where a combination of low temperatures and high winds put the wind chill below freezing, in an extremely drafty tent. My tent sounded like a sailing ship in irons (translate: very loud snapping and crackling sounds) as it attempted to take to the air, all night long. Fortunately, I had enough sleeping bags, fleecy garments, and quilts, to deal with the temperature, but the tent wall banging against my cot was hard to ignore. I'm glad to be home. This actually wasn't as bad as that time I went glacier camping in the winter in Alaska and got hypothermia after half my gear blew away in the wind. It's all relative. :D

It's been a thoroughly average winter here. So much so that the mlive weatherman has taken to writing articles amounting to "we're having a very normal winter... and that's not normal!"

This winter has been like the winters that were normal during my childhood. Which is not normal any more.

We're battening down the hatches here as Storm Eunice approaches with estimates of 80-100 mph winds tomorrow. Scotland and Northern England have already had several bad storms in the past three months. Luckily down here it's been a very mild winter so far.

I just read that millions in the UK are being told to stay home because of expected hurricane-level winds.

As for us, we just had another ton of snow dumped on us overnight. Still glad I'm not commuting!

Yeah, it was pretty bad (122mph winds recorded off the isle of Wight) but nothing like the '87 hurricane! A few trees down but we were not really badly hit. My daughter's uni campus is without power so the students are being sent home today until it's back on.
