So, hypothetically, if your area had a power outage, would it affect you at all?

Yeah, I would need to install a shunt to switch to battery if I had no power from Grid. Currently its configured that a power cutoff disables power everywhere. THis is in case of a fire, the power would be cut off outside as the Firefighters could get electrocuted if they went in with hoses.

Our system does that too, Alatar. No electricity from grid and our solar power generation shuts off.

We've already had a couple of short outages. The power flickers and after a few seconds the generator kicks on and we have power again. When the power comes back on, the generator shuts down. However, since we are running off a tank of propane, that would only last us a week with judicious use. I'm thinking we'll have to turn the whole system off for most of the day for extended outages to save on propane.

So, really... we have two separate systems going. Solar energy to drop our electricity bill and propane generator for power outages.

The way the grid tied solar energy works is that we have two meters on our house. One for the electricity we use and the other for the electricity we generate. Every month, we get a statement. Any electricity we produced but did not use gets credited to us for later use. But since they pay us wholesale rates and sell it back to us at retail rates, it doesn't pay to overproduce on the electricity.

As our gas powered small engine tools (lawn mowers, chainsaws, weedeaters etc) die, we've been replacing them with electric models. Recharging them with power we are generating on our system makes a lot of sense to me.

I didn't realize the solar power wouldn't be available in an emergency. Probably explains why it's not a major selling point.

In that case, it would only make sense for us if we got an EV. Maybe when the Subaru starts showing its age. It's 12, but with low mileage.

If we bought enough batteries to store all the power we'd be likely to need for several days, we could disconnect from the grid and be powered with our own solar power all the time. Sometimes in the spring and fall, though, we have cloudy/rainy days for a week a time, and that's not good for solar power generation. The dead of winter isn't good either, not at this latitude. It's good to have backup for solar unless you live in a sunny and more southerly climate.

If I were to buy one, it would be with the goal of weathering a short-term outage rather than any kind of long-term investment. Something I can set up as needed to keep the phones and a few flashlights charged and (stretch goal) run a pump and/or shop vac in the event that the basement floods in the same event would be plenty. *Winter* power outages are a scarier proposition, but also less likely.

Meanwhile, we are in the heatwave. Inland, past the hills, it's over 100. I am, thankfully, before the hills, where the cooler ocean air reaches, so it's only high 80s (about 30C). But this is June.

My normal temperature used to be 65 around this time of year. We'd get maybe 3 days of 90s a year in August/September. Not anymore.

It's supposed to get hot here, too. Ugh. Today, however, it's gorgeous.

We had 6 confirmed tornados from that storm a few days ago.

Here's some footage of one destroying a good chunk of a Meijer distribution warehouse about half an hour from here.

Is that a local paper? I notice that in the sidebar, three of the five news links have to do with shootings :Q

I've still managed to hold off on turning on the air conditioning. Will I last until July? Stay tuned to board77 to find out!

It is local, and I'm not surprised, which is sad, isn't it? Dayton and Springfield have some rough areas. Our hospital in Dayton sees a lot of GSWs, so the blood bank keeps very busy.

We're supposed to have a derecho come through here this evening. I'm posting about it in order to activate the watched-pot-never-boils clause, but am charging everything up anyway just in case.

It's supposed to be 97 F/ 36 C today. It's very muggy outside. That's very hot for this area this time of year.

Yours seems to have been unusually dire; we typically have 1-2 a year, and while they always cause problems, they don't typically measure up to what you described.

It was a nonevent locally; just a nice summer storm. There are some scattered power outages, but nothing remarkable. The cells looked like they were trying to line up near the MI/IN-OH state line and they may have done more damage farther south (like in Lalaith's area based on her FB post), but I don't think it evolved all the way into a derecho even there.

Looks like they actually did decide to call it a derecho; two of them in fact:
https://weather.com/storms/severe/video ... ke-midwest
Naturally what they're showing in the video is the worst-case scenario.

A while ago someone told me that hanging an orange flag near your bird feeder is a good way to attract Orioles. I figured why not, and ordered one that is technically a Halloween flag, but a) is orange, b) has a bird, and c) is awesome. After more than a month, it finally arrived yesterday and I hung it up today. I realized later that today is Flag Day, and this is what I hoisted:

So now all my neighbors no doubt assume I meant it as some sort of occult pledge of allegiance.

You can have some fun with it by performing rituals when you know they're watching.

So is it attracting Orioles?

I pledge allegiance to the Crow, and to the dark kingdom for which it stands. One coven, uniting all goths in blackness and in gloom.

I'm in!

Yes, we had horrible winds and storms last night. My baby trees survived, but I think one has some wounds. My lamppost light bit the dust. There was lots of tree debris, some messed up roofs, and several trees split or down just in my neighborhood. There are still many without power, and that truly sucks because it was close to 100F here today and incredibly muggy. My car read 105 in the parking lot. Ugh!

We have lots of crows around, so I read up about them. I'm starting to think we would do well to have crows in charge.

Glad you all made it through the weather. I've seen some videos from the Midwest, it looks scary. And of course Yellowstone flooding is very bad.

Here, the fires are starting. Just some grass fires so far. We saw smoke from this one from a hike today. It has since been contained.
