I feel like this was just a gratuitous dog pic, but I'm here for it.

I was unaware of that some service dogs worked gigs as space heaters.

We are under the atmospheric river. Again. Or still.

San Francisco got more rain in the last two weeks than in any 13-day period on record since 1871.

Shoutout to my city council for replacing storm drains this year. And to my husband for digging up the sand and mud that had clogged our driveway drain and caused the garage to flood last Saturday. We dammed off the garage door, but so far, the drain is working.

Now if only whatever is rattling and droning outside holds up...

Fingers crossed!!!

I noticed several dandelions in bloom on my neighborhood walk yesterday. It's January in Ohio. Yes, it's cold again, but it should never have been warm enough for dandelions to bloom in the first place!

You know what we've been missing? Hail. Up till now, that is.

Update: and a thunderstorm, but that's not new. On Sunday, we had two lightning strikes only a couple miles away.

Nothing so anxiety-provoking here, except it feels like spring. But then it starts getting dark at 4:30.

I've noticed it getting darker later now, closer to 6pm.

Our first cold snap of the season: minus twenty.

We also have several feet of accumulated snow. We're actually having a real winter for a change!

Just a touch below 0C (in the sun). (Seasonably) colder weather is incoming, though; down to ~-10 by the end of the week.

Minus 30 tonight, staying low for the next couple of days.

You know the least appealing thing about winter? I can't just grab the dogs and go for a walk. I have to put all the winter gear on as they watch me and get more and more impatient and vocal.
As improbable as it seemed at the time you posted this, I now have the same problem! And she's smart; she can tell whether I'm standing up to go for a walk vs. standing up for some other reason even before I start putting stuff on. I don't know what my tell is. :blackeye:

Also; how does one communicate to a hyperactive puppy that attacking my shoes and the leash as I try to put them on only makes the process take longer? :blackeye:

They're experts in reading body language. They can pick up on things we don't even know that we're broadcasting.

Regarding your puppy, whenever she attacks your shoes or the leash, just freeze until she sits, and then continue the process. You may have to tell her to sit at first, but she'll figure it out on her own eventually.

That freezing trick worked pretty well on my old pup. He figured out the deal quickly. (For me it was getting him to stop jumping on me in greeting.)

This works at feeding time too. If they crowd around me when I start preparing the food, I immediately put my hands at my sides so it's obvious that I'm not advancing the process, and stare straight ahead without engaging with them at all until they sit, and then I continue the process.

I probably originally had to tell them to sit, but I don't need that any more. They see me stop, and they immediately know that sitting makes the process go faster so they sit and wait.

Good advice; will give it a try. I'll also add that even though I knew perfectly well that puppies can be trouble, I didn't have "will dig up the tulip bulbs and eat them as soon as the snow melts*" on my mental con list.

*to bring this sort of back on topic
