The concerning part is that they can't trace how the patient contracted the disease, which means it's endemic in the population. But not too concerning, because the disease does not spreads readily and is very treatable.

Unless it mutated....

An amusing anecdote from Dolly Parton's autobiography:

Dolly Parton entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest. And lost.

In her memoir, Dream More, Parton tells a very amusing story. One day on a trip to Los Angeles, she heard about a Dolly Parton look-alike contest that was being held at a local bar. She had a kooky idea – wouldn't it be funny to go down there and enter the contest herself. To do that, she decided to over-exaggerate everything about her appearance – she made her beauty mark bigger, her eyes bigger, her hair bigger – she made everything bigger. When she was all dolled up, Parton and a group of her friends made their way down to the contest.

When Parton got to the bar, she didn't let on that she was the real Dolly Parton. She was given a number, like everybody else, and told to get in line.

The contest was to be judged by the audience. Contestants were instructed to walk across the stage, and the votes would be cast by applause. The biggest applause would win. So one by one, the contestants paraded in front of the audience.

When it came to Parton's turn, she smiled and sashayed across the stage. And lost. To a man. Not only that, Dolly Parton got the least applause. She said she was dying of laughter inside. Little did the contest know they had the real thing in their midst.

The other week, it was a woman who for a fever from trying to give mouth to mouth to an injured wild bunny. Now it's turtles.

On Wednesday in the US there will be a nationwide emergency alert rest. All phones will make a loud noise as part of it.

A public awareness campaign is reminding people who may be hiding an emergency phone from, for example, an abusive partner, to turn them off.

That's not the weird part. The weird part is that this conspiracy theory is being spread, apparently unironically.

I suppose you've all read about the 737-MAX that lost a door during flight? Isn't this the same aircraft that was responsible for several hundred deaths because of a software flaw?

I've just re-checked - none of my booked flights in April are on this model.

Yes it is. Last time, they tried to fix a design flaw with a software patch, but the complete fix cost extra and so the airlines of some countries were flying the plane without it.

As I remember it, the plane had a tendency to pull its nose up so they made the software push it down, but without the complete autopilot (?) program, it put a plane into a nosedive. Twice.

They have been downed for a while but I guess the FAA decided that the software has been fixed.

Or to be slightly more cynical, money.

Iirc, the issue started because Boeing wanted to modify an existing model to make it bigger instead of designing a new plane from scratch, which would involve a lot more regulatory scrutiny. Also not to forget the changes made under trump, where the aircraft manufacturers could name specific people to talk to the regulators rather than the regulators going in and deciding who to interview.
