Air fryer. That's the best way.

My toaster oven is half-broken - the upper heating element burned out. I'm finding that this has possibilities. I can get toast that's crispy on one side but soft and warm on the other, perfect for peanut butter. And if I want a normal toast, I can flip it.

And it heats frozen pizza nicely, without overdrying the crust.

But I don't dare to cook meat in it.

We did buy a replacement, which has an air fryer function, but then my husband decided that he doesn't like it. He has until the end of the weekend to return it, and then I'll set it up.

My kids swear by the glass of water hack. Just put a glass of water in the microwave along with the pizza. Apparently it works, but I've never tried it myself.

For how long do they microwave it, and at what power?

According to Mr Google:
Quote:
Simply place the pizza on a plate, put it in the microwave and add a cup or glass of water. cook it on high for 30 seconds (or more depending on your microwave) and it will be cooked to perfection. The cup of water helps the base stay crispy, still allowing the cheese to melt.

It seems counter-intuitive to heat pizza with water to prevent the crust from getting soggy. So how does it work? The answer has to do with the interaction between microwaves and matter.

First, heating a glass of water for 30-45 seconds in the microwave isn’t long enough to bring the water to a boil. So, you won’t fill the microwave with water vapor, which could ruin the crust.

The water works by acting as a “microwave sink” or a “dummy load.” While the technique may be new to you, chemists and physicists have known about it for a while. Heating chemicals in a microwave is different from heating them on a hot plate!
I guess it would depend on the amount of Pizza you're reheating though?

That's very weird but if it's real it's really cool. It kinda feels like a "how does work??” magic trick.

I'm going to have to try that! :D Sometimes I eat left over pizza cold rather than risk a soggy crust in the microwave.

Yes, they freaking are!

In any case, I just had an opportunity to try the water in the microwave trick. It did a decent job, better than just microwaving alone. I don't think it did a better job than the air fryer, though.

I was objective.

Magic.

Yeah, the oil on the surface of the food in the air fryer makes sizzling noises. That doesn't happen until it gets up to fry temperatures.

Tried the microwave+water trick tonight and was not impressed. I can't compare it to ordinary microwave pizza as I don't ever do that, but the bread was fairly soggy, as I would expect from typical microwaving.

Ah. Then I guess the technique in the video is the way to go?

I tried it on a slice of cheap, previously frozen pizza and it worked fine. The water in the microwave thing, I mean.

I think next time, I'll be scientific and do one slice with the water and another without and see what difference it makes.
