13 years or 14 years seem very young to us, but in fact they are the common ages for marriage, and for childbearing, for most of our history. Women of that age have routinely borne children. It's just that we don't like it now. Well, yes, they did, but I am not convinced that it means that they wer...

TH , may I say that I'm very relieved that you didn't take my (clumsily worded) post personally. It's the most wondrous thing about b77 that we can express and discuss diverging views with goodwill and intelligence, and I hope we can preserve that. I think I am in agreement with you, if "we&qu...

Dunno yet whether it's good or bad but I sure wouldn't enjoy the sort of cliched movie that that critic expects to be served up to him. Just what I was thinking as I read the review. The reviewer seems mostly disappointed that not all Muslims were shown to be bloodthirsty villains. FWIW, Saladin do...

Long before that, surely, Axordil . On a complete tangent, a book I read mentioned that it was a common practice in Middle Ages for priests to perform marriages with the bride's pre-wedlock child (a child, not a pregnant belly) concealed under her skirts. After the ceremony, the child would come out...

I agree, yovargas . But is the closed board what we are? Err... OK, so it is. Let me rephrase it. Is the closed board what we want to be? This reminds me of something I've asked in Manwe once. On an invitation only, member-run and potentially member-owned board, who's we ? And which we are so much m...

No, it means we care to have the board the way we want it, rather than trying to please everybody. I agree that trying to please everybody is futile. And I think I know what you intended to say. AND I know you didn't mean it that way, only... it sounds just a tiny bit like something I've heard befo...

Alandriel, I think photobucket is down now.
EDITED: Or maybe it's just me having problems. Can't get to the silly thing today.

I'm all for smaller sigpics, having to log in from my poky dial-up at home, but I've noticed that even through dial-up b77 loads up fairly quickly.

While we are talking about these matters: we have a very cute name for the forum management area, but we might want to change that so when people are googling for that one word, b77 does not come up. And if you are wondering why I'm not typing the word here - it's because I don't want my post to com...

maybe you could wrap your daughter's sandwiches in a paper towel, or those waxed paper bags you mentioned, and then put it in the plastic container? That would keep it from getting squished, and I doubt that paper towels or wax paper would get damp enough to leach anything out of the plastic. That'...

You (collectively) do realize that you are creating great publicity for England? I think I'll apply for it just to see what all the fuss is about. :D Seriously, though, if it's as yovargas describes it, I suspect that it is a lot more tame in language and content than some general purpose and even p...

The constitution is nearly 5000 words long, and there are many articles to go. I have to admit, this has been bothering me. Most messageboards and websites in general only have a single page where you promise not to do anything immoral, illegal or fattening. Do we expect all newcomers to read throu...

Holby , I was under the distinct impression that the vote on whether the board should open has happened, many times, and the consensus was YES. What I thought Voronwe was trying to find is what needs to be completed before the board can open - the entire constitution or some basic parts of it or co...

I can find those steel containers easily enough, but the whole idea is that it is easy to lose track of leftovers if you can't see them, and plastic wrap does that very well. Err... sticky notes? :D :scratch Is the plastic wrap (or plastic lid on a glass container) really a problem even if it doesn...

How about foil? It's recyclable.

Thanks, Rodia! I did my bit of lazy philantropy for the day. Hey, better lazy than none, right? I'm all excited that I can still read Polish! My grandfather was born in Poland and he taught me a bit of the language. I would also suggest that once you click on the button, you also click on one of the...

That misses my point which is that there is something wrong with a society that has so many young members in this situation. Actually, that is the point that I was trying to make, along with the others who posted in this thread. We, as individuals and society, need to concentrate time and resources...

Halplm and I do seem to agree on the idea of personal responsibility. It is at the root of his argument and deserves some acknowledgement. I respect his willingness to participate in this discussion. Idylle, I don't see anybody discarding personal responsibility for themselves . I certainly do not,...

I was staying out of this thread, because honestly I don't trust myself to stay civil. But I did want to stop here to give a hug to all of you wonderful women who shared their stories. It must have been difficult and painful, and I thank you.
