I don't think eagles care about insect availability. :P Everything lower on the food chain does. You will all be happy to revel in a little schadenfreude. This Californian chose not to spend the past few days luxuriating in balmy weather, but to go camping in the mountains, where a combination of l...

Alatar, my son Aiwe would like to be on B77 again, but his sign-on has expired, and according to Jude, neither the B77 nor the HOF email confirmation mechanisms are working for new members. Can you get him reinstated on B77? Thanks. With or without the umlaut is fine. :)

The last 7 years were the hottest 7 on record, so I wouldn't be surprised. If the birds are going by temperature, and insect availability, rather than day length, then they may well be starting earlier. it's in the mid 70s here today. Not the February of my youth.

Well, the seven hottest years on record have been the past seven years, so yeah, global warming is now a noticeable thing. Likewise, in the Bay Area, we used to get snow at sea level once every 10 years, and fairly regular dustings on the 2,000+ foot peaks nearby. Not anymore. https://www.nytimes.co...

I used to go swimming in an indoor pool in Fairbanks, and listen to my hair clink like a chandelier on the walk home.

I climbed Mt Julius Caesar, 13,220 ft, 4029 m, as a teen. I spent an inordinate amount of time on the way up stopping to admire the flowers and scenery (and catching my breath). There were Skypilot plants blooming up there. They only grow above 10,000 feet. A once in a lifetime experience. https://c...

Translating to archaic.... give me a moment.... 64*F to 74*F year round, with a month below freezing, ample snow, and 25 really hot days. You didn't mention cloud cover, rain, humidity, smoke, or deadly weather, all of which could be a concern. I recommend where I live, on the California coast, with...

I started out in Chinese, it answered in Japanese. I responded in Japanese, and it switched back to English. So I tried Spanish, and we chatted for a while in that language. Finally, it said it enjoyed talking with me, then switched to English. I believe I was actually just talking to other people w...

I used to buy ladybugs and praying mantises from my local garden center. They had mesh bags full of them in the fridge. Yes, most of them left my garden for the rest of the neighborhood, but it was a fun thing to do anyway.
