This thread has had several purposes, including gathering info for the Comprehensive Sticky that Anthriel developed, and getting info for other possible threads.

The Comprehensive Sticky answers questions for which there is generally one answer, or one set of answers. But there will always be subjects that morph as the board morphs, such as a list of acronyms we use. That list will never be comprehensive, or complete. There are some things that are growing and evolving over time. These will probably become threads of their own, with links to the Comprehensive Sticky.

Things I am collecting so far:

-Acronyms (rough draft follows in this thread; a new thread will be started soon)
-Specialized vocabulary from Tolkien, Farscape, Holby, etc. (rough draft herein)
-How to do weird fonts and symbols (just so research, so far)
-Changes to the smilie collection (not started yet, see our collection on page 2 of this thread)
-How to get started in Role Playing (has this been started elsewhere?)

__________________________

The following was the original start of this thread. I just like to recycle threads and save pixels.

This thread will be for tips on acronyms, weird fonts, how to do this, how to do that. In some cases, it will just be links to other how to threads. Please add your comments or PM me, and I will either add it to the first few posts, or link to it. Thanks!

Acronyms for general usage
We don't encourage the use of acronyms on Board 77 because they are confusing to those who don't know what they mean or have limited English. But they slip in anyway. Here are the most common ones:

AFAIK - as far as I know
BTDT - been there, done that
BTW - by the way
ETA - edited to add (or estimated time of arrival)
FAQ - frequently asked questions (and their answers)
FTR - for the record
FWIW - for what it's worth
HDTOL = horrid death throes of laughter
HTH - hope that helps
IC - in character (used by role players)
IIRC - if I recall correctly
IMO - in my opinion
IMHO - in my humble opinion
IMNSOH - in my not so humble opinion
IOW - in other words
LOL - laughing out loud
OOC - out of character (used by role players)
OT - off topic
OTOH - on the other hand
OTT - over the top - too much
RL - real life
ROTFL - rolling on the floor laughing
RP - role play
TBC = to be continued
TBH - to be honest
TIA - thanks in advance
TMI - too much information (too intimate)
TPTB - the powers that be - the people in charge
YMMV - your mileage may vary - you may experience it differently

Tolkien-Related Acronyms
AAHD - Arwen at Helm's Deep
AATF - Arwen at the Fords
ALINTTTFOTR - Arwen's Life Is Now Tied To The Fate Of The Ring
CoE - Council of Elrond
EAHD - Elves at Helm's Deep
ROAP - Ring on a Plinth
RSWD - Round Spikey Wheely Dealy
WITW - Watcher in the Water

I'm guilty of using BTDT.
An idiot's guide to quotes would be handy.

OTT. No idea what it means, which is why I want it on the list. :P
AAHD. Arwen at Helm's Deep.
WITW. Watcher in the Water.
OTOH. On the other hand.

That's all I can think of.

Same here Anth!

I've been too embarrassed to ask what it means!

You know, this is a handy thread, but I wonder if it could be incorporated with other threads like how to post pictures...one big "How to" thread. Saves space and could look a little nicer....and could be stickied and not buried underneath invite threads.

Round Spiked Wheely-Dealie. Tentative spelling, but that was the phrase.

Oh! I just remembered another M00b acronym—from before my time, but people were SO upset! I think it was ROAP—Ring On A Plinth! There were huge arguments about it, after it came out that the Ring was actually going to be laid down in full view at the CoE (and there's another one!).

Edit: There are those M00b-related misspellings such as M00b and M00bies :( and w00t! w00t! and n00b.

I thought w00t was mainstream usage? ;)

Thought of another one:

FTR - for the record

Well, probably. Ang could tell us.

Back in the day I pretty much lived in M00bies. I get out more now.
