I just got done reading the latest greatest Dresden novel, Cold Days. Was a fantastic book.
I won't drop any spoilers, but the end was pretty twisted.

If you havn't tried these book I highly recommend you give them a shot. I've gotten quite a few side splitting laughs, and tense moments from them. :)

They are fantasy. Set in Todays Chicago, but in a world where Vampires and Creepy crawlys are real.
Our hero Harry, is a Wizard / paranormal investigator. And he's really good at pissing off everything from fallen angels to Mab, queen of air and darkness...

I hadn't heard of them, but your description intrigues me. I think I'll check them out.

What's the first in the series?

Storm Front is the first in the series. I haven't mentioned them before? It's one of my favorite urban fantasy series. :) I got hooked on them before the audiobooks came out- and they are even BETTER as audio books. The reader is the guy that played "Spike" on the Buffy series, and he's probably one of the best readers I've heard yet. Very talented voice actor. It's too bad he still has a regular acting career going, because he doesn't read very many other books. ;)

They made a shortlived TV series out of it, too. We saw that first and liked it well enough we started on the books, too. Turns out the TV series got a whole lot wrong, but it was still good enough for me to seek out the books.

Anyway, the whole series just keeps getting better with each book. The last book was released in Nov 2012, and they usually have a title and and expected release date online by now..... I hope the author isn't having problems!

Hrumph. My library only has a french translation and a comic book adaptation.

I'll have to see if I can find it on amazon...

I will warn you all: The Dresden series is Evil! You can pick up a book, thinking it's just a regular story, but as you start reading, the words stay inside you, lurking within your soul, getting stronger as you turn the pages towards the middle of the book. Suddenly, about two thirds through, your will is stolen from you! You might want to sleep, you might want to go to work, but no! The book has taken control of you, and you must keep reading! Only once you finish it, read through every page until the end, does it relinquish control and let you live your life again. But even then, the memory of what you read never leaves, and you are constantly tempted to return to the book, or another in the series. Of you'll be driven to websites where you can link to other fallen readers as you wallow in your despair as you wait for the next book to be released, the next addition to the spell, the possession which has taken over you!

Translation: For those that haven't read the Dresden books, they're very good. The later books, in particular, become almost impossible to put down once you get towards the end...very fast paced, very high tension, very intricate, and very unpredictable.

Hmmm... based on your review maybe I should wait until the whole series is out, and then read them all back to back?

You will have a LONG wait. He's planning a total of 25 books to the series.....and he is currently working on #15. Don't be worried about reading a long series and that it might drag. Each book equals lost sleep as you get sucked into saving the day again. ;)

Nah, just the beginning of an empty weekend.

As SJ says, each book is an entirely self-contained story. It's not a soap opera series, where each book leads into the next. So far there's been only two cliffhanger endings. With the exception of those two books (#12 and #13) the rest can be enjoyed entirely on their own...

...though you will want to read more, more, more!

Actually I will have to dissagree with you... The books are a series, and each book leads to the next. You could I suppose pick up most any of the books and read it on it's own. But you would be wondering about all the references to people and places that are from the previous books.... in fact you would only be getting half the story, so to speak...

Yeah, but each book has a complete story arc (if that's the right word). A plot that resolves by the end of the book.

I read a freebie Kindle book from Amazon the other day that just stopped. In the middle. :x With only one minor plot point resolved. :rage: And then you were expected to pay $4.99 for the "next" book. :nono:

That was a completely dishonest marketing ploy. I refused to get the next book purely on principle. Well, also the writng was a bit clutsy.....

IIRC Butcher's first book was written as an exercise in formula writing and the sequels pretty much follow the same formula. I, personally, happen to really like that format so it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I haven't been able to get into his other series at all.

Yes, you should read them in order-- but no, each book is a separate entity. The only reason I chaff at the delay between book is because they are so darn GOOD! I can't wait to see what happens next!

Well, hear. I do the audio versions. I only have the first 6 or so in paperback.

You should give his other series a chance the Codex Alera books are pretty good. Much more traditional swords and scorcery type books. I don't getting into audio books since I much prefer the voices in my head.... um... so to speak... ;)
