Minus the allergy issues, it's been lovely here!

I'm definitely vitamin D starved, even though I take supplements. My body clearly isn't concerned about skin cancer, even though my brain tries to be. (deck-sitting Saturday, 5K yesterday, and a hike today  )

<ignores the hippo> :P

A random piece of information I picked up this week is that the Inuit are the only group of humans who live in the far North but have not lost melanin and remain dark-skinned. They get enough vitamin D from the fish in their diet that light skin would not be a useful adaptation.

I depend on sunscreen and big hats. I am a tad bitter about it, given that my ancestors were supposed to have lived in the desert.

That is very interesting, Frelga!

Yeah, my dad has very dark skin, as a Hungarian. I have quite a bit of Native American blood. But, nah. I am as pale as you can get unless you're an albino.

(Yay, red hair!)

The weather is gorgeous here. The garden is full of daffodils in bloom.

Well, all of my genes are Hungarian, and no one in my family is the least bit dark skinned. In fact, my skin is so pale that, with my reddish-brown hair, some Americans have refused to believe I'm not Irish. (Don't ask why - I was puzzled, too. There are plenty of people with light skin and dark hair who aren't Irish.)

Which reminds me, Lali - you might find this research interesting, given your heritage.

On Thursday we're supposed to get a high of 26. I've forgotten what that feels like.

Is there really such a thing as 26, or is that one of those made-up numbers that only exist in theory?

That was interesting, inky. :)

My dad is certainly among the darker-skinned Hungarians, whatever that makes him. Think of my girl crush, Mariska Hargitay. Black hair, very dark brown eyes, dark olive skin. Well, actually, following a trail from her Wikipedia page, take a look at her dad: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_Hargitay and then my dad:

26 is very nice, Jude! :)

There was a significant Turkish influence on Hungary, IIRC.

Figures, the one day I trust the forecast and leave my jacket at home, it rains.

Frelga, what the newer studies suggest is that although the Turks ruled (at least part of the country) for over a hundred years, they left very little genetic influence behind in the population.

Lali, my mom was on the other end of the spectrum - skin so fair it burns but never tans. Luckily, my dad could tan, though he wasn't dark-skinned - so I can get a tan, though it's not very dark. Presumably the tendency to form freckles and moles comes from my mom's side of the family, where there were a lot of blondes.

I don't know if you've read on the news about the flooding in Ottawa and the evacuations. So far my neighbourhood is okay, though.

The good news is, though, that my dad's house is located at the top of a hill in the very highest point in Ottawa, so the chances of him having to evacuate are small to none. If worst comes to worst, the three of us can just move in with him :D

Wow. Be safe, Jude! I hadn't heard about it. We have flood warnings around here but not in my specific area.

I haven't heard, either. Glad you have a high ground base if you need it.

I looked up my area to see what would happen if the sea levels rise as predicted. I'll end up with a nice seaside property one day.

I think some people don't realize that when the sea level rises, it doesn't mean losing a foot of shoreline for a foot of rise. It means anything that's not that many feet above sea level will be under water.

When you say "seaside property" how close are you talking? Water lapping at your doorstep?

I drove by the Ottawa River today and wish I had brought my camera. I should go again tomorrow. Then I'll have some great shots for my weekly contribution to the photo blog.

About five blocks. It's a couple miles now.

Same here. We're on relatively "high ground" for the area, but in terms of sea level, it's not that high. At least, we've never had to worry about buying flood insurance, being in the least flood-prone rating (so far).

I lived in the Midwest for a few years, which included some historic floods. I was amazed at how slow-moving flood waters can undermine and destroy solid roads.
